This week, PCA hosted the Model Consulting Group for “Forensic Interviewing for Individuals and Disabilities.” Led by retired Sergeant Dermot Whelan, the presentation focused on the intersection between sexual abuse and the disabled community – discussing biases in assessment and treatment as well as techniques designed to engage young people who present on the spectrum.
Thank you to the 52 attendees who participated, representing the Department of Human Services, the Special Victims Unit of the Philadelphia Police Department, St Christopher’s Hospital, alongside staff from PCA, and a special shout out to our partner organization, Concilio, for the use of their incredible space.
Programs like these are key to building the awareness and support needed to fight child sexual abuse. Our Prevention efforts have reached thousands of people in the last three years and continue to evolve and grow to support our communities. Learn more at philachildrensalliance.org/prevent

We had an incredible morning at PCA for our annual Legislative Briefing and Breakfast!
Alongside our city partners, PCA hosted legislators and their staff members for a firsthand look into the work and people behind our mission to end child sex abuse. We gave tours of our child-focused space, presented on the current realities, challenges, and opportunities in our work, and connected with each other and our growing community.
Thank you to everyone who came today and for all who support the work we do.

PCA may be the only Child Advocacy Center in Philadelphia, but we are just one of the incredible organizations in Pennsylvania fighting to end child sexual abuse.
Connected through the network of the Children's Advocacy Centers of Pennsylvania, our power combines to make life-changing impact for children and families across the Keystone state.
This September, Pennsylvania CACs shared their SHINE in an awareness campaign meant to bring attention to the courage and resilience of survivors.

In addition to attending this incredibly important event with other members of our staff, Jillian and Carolina led two sessions on the challenges of language barriers in interviews and the impact that these challenges have on victims.
Three cheers to Jillian and Carolina for representing the work of PCA so well and for being incredible advocates for our work!

Philadelphia Children’s Alliance is a really special place.
There is not a day that goes by that we take the power of what we do for granted and each year we take a week in August to appreciate our exceptional staff who do the hard work that changes children’s lives.
Last Friday, our team hit the green at Top Golf to round out Staff Appreciation Week. It was an afternoon of fun, companionship, and celebration. We honored the 3-year anniversary of our Executive Director, Benita Williams, teamed up for games, improved our swings, enjoyed raffle prizes and delicious food – what could be better!

It’s easy for children to just say "yes" or "no" to our questions, so it is important for caregivers and parents to give prompts that require bigger answers.
Open-ended questions let children know that adults care and are interested in them,
which creates a safe space to talk about things that could be challenging or uncomfortable.

PCA is excited to announce that Joseph D. Culley, Jr is our new Board President!
Joe has been an extraordinary ambassador of PCA ever since he learned about the organization in 2018. He has served on our Board of Directors since 2019 and held the position of Vice President from 2021-2024. Joe and his wife Kelly also chaired the 2021 Bear Affair.
Culley is the Head of the Capital Markets Group at Janney Montgomery Scott and a member of the firm’s Executive Leadership Team.

Joe also currently sits on the Endowment Board for St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Whitemarsh. Previously, he dedicated 10 years to the Board at the Mann Center for Performing Arts in historic Fairmount Park and also served on the Board for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Even when we aren't open, PCA always has a team in place to respond to emergency situations.
Have fun and stay safe.
School often creates a structure and routine that helps keep children safe.

Happy Summer, Philadelphia! Schools are out, the days are hot, and kids across the city are exploring new places and spending more time with friends.

With longer days and warmer temperatures, summer brings the promise of refreshing swims, new adventures, and exciting exploration.
For families, it also brings new challenges to keep children safe. As schedules change, care providers shift, and children have more down time, it’s our duty to make sure they have the tools they need to thrive.

Our leadership team is back from the 2024 National Children’s Alliance Leadership Conference in Washington, DC! They connected with other professionals from child advocacy centers across the country, AND they got some incredible photos!
PCA advocated for change on Capitol Hill at Senator Fetterman’s and Senator Casey’s offices. We coordinated with peers to better serve our children and their families. Our very own Vickie Melvin and Nuria Orsino shared the remarkable impact of our mental health partnerships and outreach with attendees. It was time well spent to amplify the voices of survivors and their families and share challenges and successes, new research, and evolving practices.
Thank you, @natlchildrensalliance pecial shoutout to @senfettermanpa and @bobcaseyjr for engaging in conversation with us around the role that our elected officials play in helping their constituents survive and prevent child sex abuse.

The children we serve are far more than the trauma that brings them through our doors.
They are storytellers, adventurers, sports stars, champions, and artists. Part of our jobs are to make sure that they have the support to stay those things, even in the darkest moments.
This summer, keep an eye out for our “Artist Spotlight” series.
While you won’t learn the details you may be used to learning about artists, we know you’ll feel their spirit, life, and courage through the art they share with us – just like we do.

Last week, we collected almost 2,000 stuffed animals from our friend John Spadola, PetSmart Store Leader, and his team. These brand new, adorable plushies are making their way into our offices to bring joy and comfort to kids for days (and days and days!) to come.
Thank you, John, and thank you to everyone who worked to pack and safely store this incredible donation.

Did you know that over 800 human trafficking cases were filed in Pennsylvania in the last five years?
At PCA, we know the impact this abuse has on our children. Nilsa Ulerio, MHP (pictured) is our Bilingual Child Victims of Human Trafficking (CVHT) Program Coordinator at PCA. Nilsa is one of the only clinicians in the region providing trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy specialized for child victims of human trafficking. The work that she does to support these victims directly impacts their healing and recovery.

Jamila Anderson, our Lead Intake Coordinator, just celebrated 10 years with Philadelphia Children’s Alliance!
As Lead Intake Coordinator, Jamila has spent the last decade working closely with our partner agencies to triage referrals and schedule child interviews, ensuring collaboration at all stages of this complex process.

At the end of 2023, our PCA staff had the chance to gather, unwind, and celebrate our year at @jacobsnorthwest in Mt. Airy. We ate delicious food, laughed, and even had an ugly sweater contest. You’ll see that Carolina Castano, our Lead Forensic Interviewer, was the clear winner – you can’t beat being the tree!
As we launch into 2024, we are so grateful for our team, our community, and the impact we have on Philadelphia’s children. Thank you for being here and joining us on this journey! We cannot wait for all 2024 has in store.

Our good friends from Dunkin' (@dunkin) stopped by yesterday to start the holidays early! An extra special thank you to Brian McCauley and his son Brody, who dropped off tasty gifts not just for our staff at PCA, but for the whole Philadelphia Safety Collaborative crew (SVU, DHS, and the medical clinic). We are so grateful to have such thoughtful partners. Happy Holidays, Dunkin’!

Research shows that each year, hundreds of thousands of children in our country are sexually abused – and 60% of these young victims will never feel safe enough to disclose their abuse.
Teaching our children that they can tell us about unsafe touches and behavior without getting in trouble is a huge step in growing their confidence and trust.

A huge thank you to our friends at Dare to Imagine Church (@d2ichurch), Volpe Koenig (@volpeandkoenig), and every one of our friends and supporters who contributed to this year’s Holiday Toy Drive. Because of your generosity, we get to provide holiday cheer to so many of the children and families we serve. Thank you again, from all of us!

Last week, we were thrilled to join the Center for Families and Relationships (CFAR) for our annual Mental Health Breakfast at Concilio. Pictured from left to right are @Vickie Melvin Vickie Melvin (PCA Associate Director), Jamica Cropper-Pam (CFAR Director of Outpatient Program-Northeast), Syeeda Martin (CFAR Together Through Trauma Program Director), Belen Gomez (CFAR Children Deserving Services Program Director), and Sharon Rice (PCA Program Manager.)
Our community connections allow us to make an even larger impact on children and their families and we could not be more grateful to our partners.
Leaving kids in vulnerable situations leaves them open to abuse. When we have to leave our kids in solo care with another adult, make sure you do as much as possible to leave open channels of communication and be present as much as you can, even in your absence.
