Summer Safety Tips

  1. Create an emergency safety plan.
(be clear about who to call and where to go)

  2. Create daily schedules and agreed upon check-in times.
(a few consistent activities/check in times go a long way)

  3. Show up unexpectedly.
(to camps, activities, daycares, etc., if you can)

  4. Ask open-ended questions about counselors and providers.
(require more than a yes or no response)

  5. Use a family code word.
(in case your child needs to contact you in an unsafe situation)

  6. Have uncomfortable conversations at comfortable times.
    (
kids share more when they feel safe and calm and the adults are also calm)

  7. For older children, agree upon designated safe spaces for meet ups,
    pick ups, and drop offs.

(safe spaces make kids more confident to leave unsafe situations)

  8. Create an internet safety plan.
(including texts, websites, socials, and games)

  9. Have children memorize important names and phone numbers.
(if you can’t be reached, they should have backup)

  10. Empower kids to say no.
(to anything that makes them uncomfortable,
including with friends, family, and other trusted adults)
